Anonymus by Marius Ritiu is a series of unique sculptural masks handcrafted from recycled copper and brass plates, exploring the universal tension between identity and anonymity. Through the transformation of reclaimed metals into expressive human faces, Ritiu investigates the mask as both a protective surface and a symbolic vessel of memory, emotion, and collective experience. Each piece is individually hand-shaped, allowing the textures, folds, and patinas of the recycled materials to become integral to the character of the work, bearing visible traces of their previous lives while assuming a new sculptural identity. Oscillating between the figurative and the abstract, the masks resist portraiture, instead becoming archetypal presences that invite viewers to project their own narratives and emotions onto them. The title Anonymus underscores the paradox of individuality within the collective, suggesting that behind every anonymous face lies a unique human story. By employing recycled copper and brass, Ritiu also highlights themes of transformation, sustainability, and renewal, demonstrating how discarded materials can be reimagined as powerful contemporary artworks that speak to the shared complexities of human existence.
