Cosmic Drift by Marius Ritiu reimagines the familiar form of a surfboard as a vessel suspended between worlds. Hand-hammered in copper over an existing surfboard, the sculpture transcends its original function, becoming an enigmatic object that evokes both a meteor shaped by its passage through space and an ancient craft from a distant galaxy. The richly textured surface, marked by countless hammer blows, captures the dynamic interplay of light across the warm metallic skin, suggesting the scars of cosmic travel and the passage of immense time. Hovering between the language of contemporary sculpture and speculative archaeology, Cosmic Drift invites viewers to imagine a fragment of an unknown civilization or a celestial object that has drifted across the universe before arriving on Earth. By transforming an everyday object through the alchemy of traditional metalworking, Ritiu explores themes of exploration, migration, and metamorphosis, creating a work that speaks to humanity's enduring fascination with the unknown and the infinite possibilities that lie beyond the horizon.
