Is Anybody Out There is an interactive installation by Marius Ritiu that transforms the act of striking a golf ball into a meditation on communication, vibration, and humanity's search for connection within the universe. Constructed from hand-worked copper sheets, the installation invited visitors to hit golf balls directly at the sculptural surface, generating resonant vibrations that travelled through the metal with every impact. The work takes its title from the enduring question of whether we are alone in the cosmos, while drawing inspiration from Nikola Tesla's belief that "if you want to understand the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration." Each collision between the golf ball and the copper becomes more than a physical event; it is a pulse of energy, a transmission that ripples across the material like a signal sent into space. As the copper gradually records the traces of these repeated impacts, the installation becomes a collective archive of human interaction, where sound, movement, and material memory converge. By inviting the audience to actively shape the work, Ritiu dissolves the distinction between artist, artwork, and participant, proposing that every action generates unseen waves of influence. Is Anybody Out There ultimately reflects on our desire to communicate across vast distances—whether with one another or with the unknown—suggesting that the universe itself may be understood as an intricate network of resonant frequencies, where every vibration carries the possibility of connection.
