Odysseus by Marius Ritiu is a contemporary sculpture that reimagines the familiar form of a travel bag as a poetic meditation on movement, displacement, and the human condition. Handcrafted in copper and finished with a richly developed patina, the sculpture presents a weathered suitcase accompanied by a single shoe and a sandal—objects that evoke the traces of an interrupted journey and the quiet narratives left behind by those who travel. The title alludes to the mythical wanderer Odysseus, transforming the luggage into a symbol of both physical and existential voyage, where every departure carries the hope of return. The absence of the traveler invites viewers to imagine their own stories of migration, exploration, exile, or homecoming, while the mismatched footwear suggests the unpredictability and fragility of every journey. Through its expressive materiality and symbolic use of everyday objects, Odysseus reflects on themes of memory, identity, and belonging, elevating the humble suitcase into a timeless monument to humanity's enduring impulse to travel and seek new horizons.
