Oumuamua XI by Marius Ritiu is a contemporary sculpture inspired by the first known interstellar object to pass through our solar system, a mysterious celestial visitor whose name, ʻOumuamua, means "scout" or "messenger from afar" in Hawaiian. Handcrafted in copper and finished with a richly textured patina, the work captures the elongated, weathered character of an object shaped by an unimaginable journey through deep space. Rising vertically from its pedestal, the sculpture appears both geological and extraterrestrial, its fragmented surface suggesting the erosive forces of time, impact, and cosmic travel. Rather than depicting the astronomical object literally, Ritiu transforms it into an abstract monument that reflects on themes of exploration, impermanence, and the unknown. The sculpture evokes a relic that has traversed billions of years and countless star systems before briefly entering human observation, inviting contemplation of our place within an immeasurably vast universe. Through its expressive materiality and tactile craftsmanship, Oumuamua XI bridges scientific discovery and poetic imagination, proposing that every fragment of matter carries within it a history far older and larger than ourselves.
