The Marstial is a functional contemporary sculpture by Antwerp-based artist Marius Ritiu, crafted in hand-worked copper and conceived as collectible functional art that merges design with sculptural presence. The work draws subtle associations with a Martian landscape, particularly in the way its copper surface suggests oxidized terrain, crater-like textures, and geological formations shaped by time and impact rather than human intent. This planetary reference reinforces the sculpture’s sense of otherness, as if it belongs to an imagined environment where material and landscape are indistinguishable. At the same time, the piece maintains its grounding in contemporary sculpture and design, balancing its extraterrestrial associations with a carefully controlled physical presence in space. Through this tension, it becomes both an object and a landscape fragment—something that feels simultaneously familiar in its material craft and distant in its evocation of a barren, Mars-like terrain.
